A survey-led removals Reading service from a Bedfordshire family firm trading since 2002, planned around Caversham Bridge crossings, Oxford Road’s Victorian terraces, Oracle loading restrictions and the A329(M) and IDR timing.
What should you know before booking removals in Reading across the Thames
Reading sits either side of the Thames, with Caversham and Emmer Green to the north connected to the town centre by Caversham Bridge and Reading Bridge. That matters for a Caversham removals job because bridge crossings add time to every load, and if you are moving from a Caversham semi to a flat south of the river (or the other way round), the crew will factor in crossing time, traffic queues at peak periods and potential road closures.
Before you book, it helps to know:
Which side of the river you are moving from and to. North-south moves via the bridges can add 20 to 40 minutes to a job in moderate traffic. We plan the route at survey stage so move day is not the first time anyone has thought about it.
Whether you have parking outside both properties. If a neighbour’s van or a skip lorry blocks the road on the day, the crew needs a fallback plan. We discuss this at survey.
Your move volume. A three-bedroom house with a loft and a garage is a very different day to a two-bedroom flat. Our advisers take a detailed inventory so you get a quote for your actual job, not a ballpark.
Whether you need packing. Our packing service Reading option runs from breakables-only right up to a full pack and unpack with material disposal, using book boxes, tea chests, bubble wrap and packing paper.
Reading’s mix of Victorian terraces, 1970s semis, riverside apartments and new-build estates means no two jobs are the same. A survey-led approach is how we keep each move on schedule.
How do removals work on Reading’s Victorian terraces with tight access on Oxford Road and Cemetery Junction
Oxford Road, Cemetery Junction and the streets running off them feature some of the tightest access in Reading. Front doors open directly onto the pavement, parking is heavily restricted, and a standard 7.5-tonne removals lorry often cannot pull up outside. Here is how we handle it.
Access assessment at survey
When one of our advisers visits before your move date, they note road width, turning circle constraints and whether a smaller vehicle or a shuttle relay is the right call. A shuttle means a smaller van loads at the property and transfers to the large lorry parked on a wider nearby road. It takes a little more time but protects your belongings and the vehicles. For smaller studio or bedsit loads near the town centre, our man and van Reading option handles compact jobs without sending a full-size lorry where it is not needed.
Protective covers and narrow doorways
Victorian terraces often have narrow hallways, steep staircases and low banisters. We bring protective furniture covers, hallway floor runners, banister wrap and door-frame protectors on every Reading move so nothing gets marked on tight turns. Furniture dismantling and reassembly is included where items will not pass through doorways whole.
Timing the job
We plan most jobs to fit a typical 8 to 10 hour working day. For terraced streets in central Reading, our adviser will agree a start time with you at the survey, typically 07:30 to 08:00 for central Reading streets to clear school-run traffic on Oxford Road and the Cemetery Junction approach before it peaks at 08:15.
Where can the van park legally in Reading town centre, and do you need permits or suspensions
Parking is one of the most common sources of delay on a Reading house move. Here is what you need to know by area type.
Victorian terraces (Oxford Road, Castle Hill) Permit-holder bays or single yellows. A suspension application to Reading Borough Council is advisable, with four to six weeks’ notice recommended.
Town centre apartments (Oracle, Riverside) Private car parks and loading bays. Co-ordinate with building management for a dedicated loading bay slot before move day.
Caversham and Emmer Green A mix of resident permit zones and unrestricted roads. Check the zone boundary for your specific street before confirming the van position.
New builds (South Reading, Shinfield) Wider roads and estate parking, generally more straightforward. Confirm visitor parking arrangements with the developer ahead of time.
Parking suspensions are applied for through Reading Borough Council. You apply for a temporary suspension of a specific bay or street section, pay a fee and the council posts notices. We advise on timing and what to ask for, but the application sits with the homeowner. If a suspension is not in place and the van cannot park within a reasonable distance, the crew will use a shuttle or hand-carry over a longer distance. Both add time. Sorting parking before move day is always worth it.
Our Services
What’s the plan for moving day around Reading traffic pinch points (A329(M), M4 J10/J11, IDR)
Reading has more traffic complexity than most of the towns we serve, and planning the route in advance makes a measurable difference to a long-distance removals Reading job.
The A329(M) spur connects the M4 at Junction 12 directly into central Reading and feeds into the IDR (Inner Distribution Road) that circles the town centre. The A329(M) into Reading backs up from around 07:45 on weekdays, and the IDR is at its worst between 08:00 and 09:30 and again from 16:30 to 18:30. For any move that involves loading from a central Reading address, we aim to have the lorry positioned and loading before 07:30 or to delay the first carry until 10:00 once the peak has cleared.
M4 Junction 10, the Reading West junction, connects to the A329 toward Bracknell and Wokingham. M4 Junction 11 feeds the A33 corridor into South Reading and is the busiest motorway pinch point for removals reading to London runs heading east. For removals Reading to London, we aim to clear J11 before 07:30 or hold at the property until after 09:30 so the crew is not sitting in M4 eastbound queues with a fully loaded lorry.
For removals Reading to Wokingham, the A321 or the A329 cover the 10-mile corridor with a 20 to 25 minute drive outside peak. We route via the A329 for moves further east toward Bracknell or Sandhurst once the A329(M) contraflow has cleared.
For office removals Reading, Hatfield Business Park and the Thames Valley commercial corridor mean multi-point drops and time-sensitive access windows. We confirm access slots and parking at both ends before the day.
When does a storage stopover make sense for Reading moves with new-build gaps or chain delays
Chains break and new-build completions slip. A storage stopover solves both without leaving you in a hotel or imposing on family. Our depot at Nimbus Park in Houghton Regis runs individually alarmed storage units in a range of sizes, with 24-hour access seven days a week and rentals from a few days up to several months. Pricing runs by the cubic foot, so a part-load is not charged as a full container.
The practical version for a Reading move looks like this. We load your Reading property on completion day, the contents go straight into a sealed unit at Nimbus Park, and we return everything to the new address as soon as your chain clears or your new-build handover is confirmed. Storage near Reading is around 40 miles from the town centre via the M4 and A1(M), which keeps the delivery run clean and straightforward when you are ready.
This option also works well for phased moves where you want to furnish the main rooms first and bring the rest later, and for Reading office removals where a fit-out gap means desks and IT need a few weeks in safe storage between the old floor and the new one.

Common mistakes people make when booking removals in Reading
Booking without a survey. An online estimate based on bedroom count misses loft contents, outbuildings, a piano or access problems that change the crew size and timing.
Leaving parking to chance. Assuming the road will be clear on moving day is the single most common cause of delays. Book a suspension or co-ordinate with building management in advance.
Underestimating packing time. A family home with 20 or more years of belongings takes longer to pack than people expect. Starting two weeks before, not two days before, is a more realistic plan.
Forgetting about storage gaps. Completion and key-release dates do not always align. A storage stopover at Nimbus Park avoids the scramble of leaving everything in a van overnight.
Not checking access at both ends. People plan carefully for the property they are leaving but forget that the new address has its own challenges, especially for new-build estates with narrow estate roads or apartment blocks with lift dimensions that will not take a standard sofa.
Yes. Alltime Removals serves Reading and the surrounding Berkshire and Bedfordshire corridor, including Caversham removals, Earley, Woodley, Tilehurst, and areas toward Wokingham and Henley-on-Thames. Get in touch for a quote and we will arrange a survey at a time that suits you.
Every job is priced from a detailed inventory, so we cannot give a meaningful fixed price here. The variables that affect cost most are volume, access at both properties, whether you need packing, whether you need storage and distance. Our adviser visits before the move to assess all of these and the quote reflects your actual job. Clear, honest pricing with no day-of surprises.
For a standard two or three-bedroom move, four to six weeks ahead is a comfortable window. For larger homes, Friday moves or end-of-month completions, booking eight weeks or more in advance keeps more dates open. If you need a parking suspension for your street, Reading Borough Council recommends at least four weeks’ notice for the application.
Yes. Our individually alarmed storage units at Nimbus Park in Houghton Regis are available in various sizes with 24-hour access, seven days a week, on short or long-term rental priced by cubic foot. We load your belongings directly from the Reading property into storage and deliver to your new address when completion goes through.
Yes. Our office removals Reading service covers business relocations including IT disconnection and reconnection, secure file and archive moving and access management for commercial premises. We send an estimator to assess the current and new offices before quoting. Contact us to book an estimator visit.
For smaller loads such as a studio flat or a single-room student move, we size the crew and vehicle to the actual job. A compact Reading move does not need a full-size lorry and crew. The survey tells us what the right team looks like and you only pay for the capacity you need.
